Having answer options within a tree structure allows you to represent data options in a parent-child relationship.
This is most often used in Canopy to create a Category Tree.

How to use the Tree List template
Creating a custom category tree
Creating a Tree List
- Navigate to Settings > Lists > "Create List"
- Select "Tree"
- Download the template
- Fill in your answer options
- Click "Choose File" and upload your template
How to complete the Tree List template
A tree list may have up to 5 levels. Each level is represented as a different column.
Please fill in the template as per the example below:
- To create a parent level, please leave the children blank.
- Every child level must have all parents filled in.
- Add "Yes" to the Active column to allow the option to be selected.
- Add "No" to the Active column to hide the option from being selected, but keep the data attached for reporting purposes.
Editing a tree list
When an existing tree list is downloaded, each option will have a unique ID (UID).
Please do not edit the UID, this is how Canopy recognises existing answer options and allows for them to be edited.
To rename an option:
- Edit the option. The UID will allow the system to link back to the original.
- The answer option will be renamed on all existing supplier records.
To move an option:
- Keep the existing Canopy UID but move the row to the desired location.
- Please ensure any parent levels are filled in correctly.
To add an option:
- Add the option as a row and leave the UID blank. Ensure parent options are created where needed.
To deactivate an option
- Deactivating a list option hides it from view or selection on supplier profiles, but keeps the data. attached to supplier profiles so it can be reinstated or reported on.
- To deactivate an option add "No" to the "Active" column.
To delete an option:
- Delete the whole row including the UID.
- NOTE: You must remove the answer option from all existing supplier records in order to delete an answer option. Please use the import tool to action this. If you would like to keep the data, then mark the option as deactivated.
Adding a custom category tree
Canopy uses the UNSPSC category tree as standard on the category question. To replace this with your own category tree please follow the below steps:
1. Create your category tree
- Go to Settings > Lists > "Create List" and create your category tree as a new list as per the instructions above.
2. Attach your category tree to the Category data point
- Go to Settings > Data Framework and find the "Category" data point
- Click "Remove" to remove the Canopy Category Tree
- NOTE: If you have selected category options on existing suppliers then this data will need to be removed using the import tool before the list can be changed.
- Click "Select Existing" and choose your new custom category list.
- Save the data point
